THE CHALLENGE
Our Client, an immersive virtual experience platform based in the UAE, needed a robust data warehousing solution to consolidate and analyze data from multiple sources. The company aimed to harness insights from its diverse datasets to enhance customer engagement and optimize business decisions. The project involved integrating data from two MySQL databases on Amazon Aurora, and a third database located on a different cloud platform.
The client wanted all this data centralized in Amazon Redshift, where it could be analyzed and transformed based on business needs, making it ready for comprehensive reporting.
THE SOLUTION
To meet the client’s requirement for centralized and actionable data insights, a modern data warehouse solution was implemented using Amazon Redshift, AWS Glue, and AWS Database Migration Service (DMS).
Data from two MySQL databases hosted on Amazon Aurora and a Google BigQuery dataset on GCP was consolidated into Redshift. AWS DMS was utilized for the initial full load from BigQuery and to configure Change Data Capture (CDC) for some selected tables in MySQL databases, ensuring near real-time synchronization.
Then a custom ETL pipeline was developed using AWS Glue to schedule the extraction, transformation, and loading of incremental data from BigQuery into Redshift. Glue Crawlers were used to catalog the ingested data and support lightweight data cleansing prior to transformation. Additional in-warehouse data transformations were performed using Redshift SQL to align the data with reporting requirements.
Amazon Personalize was also integrated to deliver real-time video recommendations based on user behavior, trained on interaction datasets prepared by Glue and stored in S3. This architecture enabled the client to achieve unified reporting, enhanced customer engagement, and scalable, cost-efficient analytics.
RESULTS & BENEFITS
Centralized Data Repository: The solution consolidated all data sources into a single, scalable data warehouse in Amazon Redshift, enabling the client to have a unified view of its data.
Real-Time Data Availability: By leveraging CDC tasks in DMS, the data warehouse reflects real-time changes in the MySQL databases. This ensures that business intelligence reports and analytics are based on the most up-to-date information, allowing for quicker and more accurate decision-making.
Enhanced Data Processing with AWS Glue: The ETL pipeline built with AWS Glue enabled smooth data ingestion from the external data source, overcoming compatibility limitations and providing a robust framework for handling data transformations. This setup allowed our client to fully utilize data from both their data platforms.
Improved Business Insights: With all data transformed and loaded into Redshift, the client could run complex analytics and generate detailed reports that were previously challenging due to fragmented data. The centralized warehouse provided insights into user engagement, customer behavior, and operational performance, supporting the business’ strategic initiatives.
Scalability and Cost Efficiency: By using Amazon Redshift and AWS Glue, the client leveraged a cost-effective, scalable infrastructure that can grow with their data needs. Redshift’s capacity to handle large volumes of data and Glue’s pay-as-you-go model ensured that the solution remained affordable without sacrificing performance.
